Descript Review: A Practical Editor for Spoken-Word Content
Descript makes spoken-word audio and video easier to edit by letting users work from a transcript, with recording, sharing and AI tools alongside it. Its fit depends on whether that workflow saves time and whether the per-seat price and separate media-hour and AI-credit limits match your workload.
What it is
Descript is an audio and video editor built around the transcript: edit the words to cut the corresponding footage, remove filler words or retakes, and generate synchronized captions. Its Underlord AI co-editor can make edits under direction, while tools such as Studio Sound, AI Speech and Regenerate address specific audio or dialogue tasks (features, video editing). The practical payoff is a simpler route from a recording to a cleaned-up episode or clip, especially for people who do not want to work primarily on a conventional timeline.
Pricing and the two meters
Prices are per person per month. The annual / monthly prices are: Free $0; Hobbyist $16 / $24; Creator $24 / $35; Business $50 / $65; and Enterprise custom. The pricing page advertises savings of up to 35% over monthly billing (pricing). Hobbyist includes one person, 10 media hours and 400 AI credits monthly, plus 1080p watermark-free export. Creator is $24 annually or $35 monthly per person, with up to three team members, 30 media hours, 800 credits, 4K watermark-free export and top-ups. Business is $50 annually or $65 monthly per person, with up to five team members, 40 media hours, 1,500 credits and team-wide Brand Studio. Seats are billed separately, so team costs rise with headcount.
Usage has two separate limits: media hours and AI credits. Both can constrain a project, so track them independently rather than assuming unused hours cover AI usage. Free provides 60 media minutes monthly, 100 AI credits one time (not recurring), and 720p exports with a watermark. Enterprise offers custom usage allowances and additional administrative and security controls (pricing).
Capability boundaries
Descript also records screens and remote sessions in Rooms, and supports sharing through links and comments. Transcription supports 25 languages (features, transcription). Translation and dubbing in 30+ languages are available on Creator and Business; Business adds proofread support. Those limits matter if multilingual production is central to your workflow. The 2026 changelog includes AI Speech on ElevenLabs v4, filler-word removal in five additional languages, caption presets and animations, and an MCP connector for AI assistant marketplaces (changelog).
This is not a replacement for Premiere or Resolve when a project depends on frame-level control, multicam workflows or color work. Its transcript-first approach is most useful when spoken content is the material being edited; it is less suited to production editors who need those deeper controls.
Who should choose it
Choose Descript if you regularly turn interviews, podcasts, tutorials or screen recordings into publishable audio and video, and transcript-based edits fit your process. Hobbyist can cover a solo creator's modest monthly workload; Creator adds higher media and credit allowances, 4K export and stock media. For teams, compare the per-seat bill and both usage pools against actual production needs before moving up a tier.
Who should look elsewhere
Look elsewhere if you need frame-accurate editing, multicam or color workflows, or if translation and dubbing are a major workload but the relevant plan limits do not fit. Also compare alternatives if multiple editors make the per-seat price too high, or if your work regularly exceeds either the media-hour or AI-credit allowance. Descript is most compelling when transcript editing saves meaningful time - not simply because it includes AI tools.
Sources
- Transcript-based editing makes spoken-word cuts accessible without relying on a timeline editor.
- Filler-word and retake removal, synchronized captions and Underlord can reduce repetitive editing work.
- Screen recording, remote Rooms and link-based sharing support recording through review in one tool.
- Creator and Business provide substantial media-hour and AI-credit allowances, with top-ups available on eligible plans.
- Transcription supports 25 languages, and higher plans offer translation and dubbing in 30+ languages.
- Media hours and AI credits are separate usage limits, so both need monitoring.
- Team seats are billed separately, which can increase costs as the team grows.
- The Free plan has only 100 AI credits once, and its export is 720p with a watermark.
- It is a weaker fit for frame-level, multicam and color workflows.
- Translation and dubbing availability depends on plan, which can limit lower-tier users.
