Runway Review: Strong Model Access, Watch the Credits
Runway is a practical option for creators and studios making short-form AI video and images who want access to a broad model lineup. Its main tradeoffs are fast credit consumption, monthly credit expiry on Standard and Pro, and API model deprecations.
What it is
Runway combines AI video and image generation tools with a developer API. Its current flagship video model is Gen-4.5; the Standard plan also lists access to all AI video and image models without watermarks (Runway pricing). For developers, Runway Dev offers an API with more than 50 models from Runway and other labs, plus a Model Router for routing by cost, latency, or quality preference (Runway Dev).
Runway's research page also signals a wider direction than today's production tools: it previews GWM Worlds, an interactive real-time 720p/24fps world simulation, and Runway Characters, real-time conversational avatars. Treat these as research previews, not as proof that those capabilities are standard parts of the current creator workflow (Runway research).
Pricing and credit economics
The Individual plans are Free at $0, Standard at $15/month or $12/month billed annually, Pro at $35/month or $28/month billed annually, and Max at $95/month or $76/month billed annually. Free includes 125 one-time credits and 5GB storage. Standard includes 625 credits per month and 20GB; Pro includes 2,250 credits per month and 100GB; Max includes 9,500 credits per month and 500GB. Pro adds features such as Runway MCP and top-up credits; Max adds early model access and studio-grade HDR/ProRes/image-sequence output. Team is $69 per seat monthly or $55 per seat billed annually, with a two-seat minimum and 13,800 pooled monthly credits (Runway pricing).
The key budgeting variable is generation time. Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits per second, so the pricing page equates Standard's 625 credits to 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 video. Other listed rates include 140 credits for five seconds of Aleph 2.0, 160 credits for four seconds of Seedance 2.0 Pro at 1080p, and eight credits per Gen-4 Image. The API uses dollar-based per-generation pricing instead; examples listed are $0.12 per second for Gen-4.5 and $0.28 per second for Aleph 2.0 (Runway pricing; Runway Dev).
Boundaries to budget for
Standard and Pro monthly credits do not roll over; they reset within 24 hours of the billing date. Max is the only plan whose monthly credits roll over, and only for one month. Free's one-time credits do not expire, and purchased top-ups (1,000-credit minimum) never expire (Runway pricing). Credits are shared within a workspace: adding editors does not add credits, and upgrades are prorated (How credits work).
API users should also plan for model turnover. The changelog records Gen-3 Alpha Turbo and Gen-4 Aleph being removed in July 2026, with requests to those models failing; it also shows additions including Seedance 2.5, Grok Imagine 1.5, Kling variants, and GPT Image 2.5. An integration that depends on fixed model IDs needs a process for handling deprecations (API changelog).
Who should choose Runway
Choose it if you make short-form AI video or images and value trying multiple models in one workflow. Standard is a reasonable starting point for occasional use; Pro or Max make more sense when their larger credit pools, storage, or listed production features match your workload. Teams should account for the fact that workspace editors share credits rather than bringing their own allocation.
Who should look elsewhere
Look elsewhere if you need highly predictable costs for frequent flagship-video generation: credits burn by the second, and Standard and Pro balances expire monthly. Runway is also a weaker fit for long-form generation, since clips are typically 4-10 seconds, or for API projects that require stable, long-lived model IDs. In those cases, test the actual workload and build for model changes before committing.
Sources
- Standard includes access to all AI video and image models without watermarks.
- Paid Individual tiers scale from 625 to 9,500 monthly credits, with clearly listed prices.
- The pricing page provides per-generation credit examples for video, images, audio, and speech.
- Pro and Max add capabilities such as Runway MCP, top-up credits, and studio-grade output options.
- Runway Dev offers more than 50 models, a Model Router, and per-model cost visibility.
- Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits per second, so a monthly allowance can cover relatively little generated video.
- Standard and Pro monthly credits expire at the billing reset rather than rolling over.
- Adding editors to a workspace does not increase its shared credit pool.
- API model removals can break requests that rely on deprecated model IDs.
- Generated clips are typically 4-10 seconds, making Runway a weaker fit for long-form generation.
